How to reduce the cost of publishing a book

The cost of publishing a book is formed by various technical parameters. By choosing these parameters, the author of the book essentially determines its cost. Size, covers, pages and other components that form the final result can be both more and less expensive.

When you don't need specific parameters for a book and you want to stay within a certain budget, how do you know what leads to a lower cost?

One way to find out is to write to “Sava grāmata” – we will be happy to advise and recommend the best and most cost-effective option for you.

The other option is to read this article.

How to reduce the cost of publishing a book is a topic that has become particularly relevant for many authors now that paper prices have doubled and almost all costs related to book production have increased. That's why we offer a range of options to make publishing your book as cost-effective as possible.

Optimise the book's print run

To avoid overspending when publishing your book, we always advise authors to carefully consider the print run of their book. It is more practical to choose enough copies of the book to cover the intended readership at the beginning and to order more copies later if demand increases. Choosing a print run that is too large at once can not only waste your money, but also lead to unnecessary consumption of resources.

Ordering an additional print run for an already published book is very simple and you will have your new copies in about a month. Simply send us an e-mail with your desired print run, we'll find the files for your previously published book and place your order!

Choose black and white pages

Of course, there are times when a planned book is full of different coloured images, coloured text and other elements that need colour. However, if the book is to be text-only, or if you don't have many pages on which to insert images, then we strongly recommend printing the main pages in black and white. This will greatly reduce the printing costs of the book. If you want to accompany the text with colour photographs, we recommend placing them on separate pages or, for example, in page blocks in the middle or at the end of the book.

Instead of hardcover, choose paper

It is undeniable that hardcover books are preferred by both readers and authors. However, paperback books also have their advantages: they are lighter, easier to carry, flexible and soft. Paperback books are also laminated (glossy, matt or soft touch), giving them extra durability and protection from external factors such as moisture and dirt.

Choose glued pages

Sewn pages are the classic choice for hardcover books, while glued pages are the choice for paperback books. However, it is also possible to incorporate glued pages in hardcover, which will make the book more durable on the outside and sufficiently durable for reading. When the pages are glued together, they are glued together by coating one side of the entire book block with the highest strength glue – PUR. PUR-glued books are very strong, of high quality and have a very high level of longevity.

Choose the appropriate format

There are mainly two standard book formats – A5 (148 x 210 mm) and B5 (170 x 240 mm), less commonly A4 (210 x 297 mm). We always encourage our authors to choose one of these options, as this is what the book printing sheets are adjusted to. Of course, it is also possible to design a book to an author's specific requirements, but then you always have to take into account that you will also have to pay for the cut-offs resulting from printing in a non-standard size. Therefore, if you want a specific size of book, it is advisable to consult which book format group it will fit into.
