One of the most frequently asked questions in publishing is: How much does it cost to publish a book? At the publishing house “Sava grāmata”, we have prepared guidelines for authors to navigate the cost field and choose the best solution for them. Publishing a book with us starts from EUR 239.00 (including taxes). This is the amount you need to consider if you want to publish a simple black and white text book. All that is needed from the author is the manuscript and the publishing house will do the rest.
In the “Author's Packages” section of the publishing house's website, you will find 4 different options for publishing books, depending on the service required and each with its own costs.
As mentioned above, the cheapest and simplest option is priced at EUR 239.00 and is called “Advantageous”. We offer this package to authors who want to publish a book in paperback, in black and white and in a small print run. The publishing house will prepare a professional layout of the pages, cover design, print files, assign an ISBN code to the book and print 17 copies. It should be noted that according to the legislation of the Republic of Latvia – 7 copies will be handed over to the National Library of Latvia collections department. So, the author is left with 10 books. Of course, if the author needs or wants, we can print additional copies in the print run! The extra charge for these copies is not much – usually EUR 3–4 per book.
The next author's package we offer is called “Bronze” and costs EUR 999.00. In this option, the author receives the services of a professional computer artist who creates an individual design for their book (pages and cover). The design and page layout are agreed on with the author. If necessary, we work with pictures and photographs provided by the author – scanning, correcting, etc. So this option is already more suitable for authors whose books use photos. Also, the total number of books included in this price is 100 paperback books. And in addition, 2 special author's copies in hardcover with sewn pages are included. As before, we also provide the ISBN code and the mandatory copies for the National Library of Latvia. When ordering the Bronze package, the author also receives 100 special bookmarks with the design of the book and 100 postcards with the design of extracts from the book. These materials may be used by the author for gifting books to friends, for mailing or for advertising – in case the author wishes to distribute the books at the sales outlets. It is also important to note that we deliver the books to the author free of charge. The author does not have to worry about delivery.
The next offer is “Silver”, which costs EUR 1399.00. This package includes the production of the e-book. When ordering the Silver package, the author receives all of the above plus an E-pub file, where their book is prepared in a format that makes it accessible and readable on any e-book device. The author can also distribute their electronic book file on one of the world's e-bookshops (e.g. Amazon.com) for a fair remuneration. If necessary, the publishing house's staff will help you with these matters! When ordering the Silver package, we also offer distribution of the book – we put them on sale in bookshops. We have a contract with the largest Latvian wholesaler “Latvijas grāmata”, whose customers are the majority of Latvian bookshops.
The most complete package for an author is the “Gold” package, which includes the full range of services that a publishing house can offer, including professional proofreading and editing services. This means that your published book will have a proofread text – grammatically and stylistically corrected. You can market it with confidence and not worry about accidental spelling mistakes that have happened during the production process. We recommend that you choose this package if you are planning to take your book to the sales outlets, as this service is also included in the Gold package. As you can see, the cost of publishing a book varies widely, and depends to a large extent on the author's preferences and what kind of book they want. We have not considered here other aspects of cost, such as the number of pages, the format of the book, the colouring, the choice of pages and cover materials, the type of binding, bookbinding, various marketing measures to promote the book, etc. To make your choice easier and to give you a general idea of the cost of publishing a book, we have already provided ready-made author packages.
